The National Youth Choir’s new Young Conductors scheme offers two young musicians from backgrounds that are under-represented in choral music the opportunity to take part in a free year-long training programme, gaining skills in conducting young singers. Apply before midday on 22 January to take part in this programme in 2024.
Who is this scheme for?
- We are looking for two young people who are passionate about singing and interested in musical leadership.
- You may or may not have conducting or leadership experience; we will build the programme uniquely around you and your experience, interests and aspirations.
- You do not need to have a background in choral music, but interest in working with vocal groups is essential.
- We would like to hear from anyone who has lived experience of barriers to choral music, and in 2024 we are particularly looking to work with young people from Black, Asian and other global majority backgrounds.
- Candidates should be aged 20 to 29, be based in England, and not in full-time education during the programme.
What is it and what will I get out of it?
- A one-year bespoke training programme for two young musicians from backgrounds that are under-represented in choral music.
- You will gain skills and experience in conducting singers aged 9 to 25. By conducting, we mean leading groups of musicians.
- An opportunity to learn with and be mentored by top conductors and educators, and get hands-on experience working with the National Youth Choirs in a range of musical styles.
- Support in building a career as a choral leader, developing your knowledge of the industry and your networks.
What’s the time commitment?
- The programme will run from February 2024 to February 2025.
- There will be regular in person and online sessions, which you should be able to fit around other commitments.
- You will take part in residential activities with our choirs during late March and early April, and again during the school summer holidays.
Will it cost me anything?
- No! This is a fully funded programme, so it won’t cost you a penny to take part.
- We will cover expenses for all in person activities. This includes auditions and interviews.
- There may also be opportunities to engage in paid work through the programme.
How do I apply?
- Please complete the online application form and submit any supporting materials by Monday 22nd January 2024 at 12 noon.
- Application information can be submitted in either written or video format. We ask for a video so we can get a better idea of you as a musician, but we do not expect the videos to be professionally made.
- Please get in touch if you would like to receive information or submit your application in a different format.
- If you have any access needs we are happy to accommodate these.
- Shortlisted candidates will be invited to attend an in-person workshop and interview week commencing 5th February 2024.
