Update (12th November)

Apologies to anyone who has been trying to respond to this opportunity but struggling with my website Contact Form. I have now (hopefully) corrected the problem. Please do try again. If you still have problems please email to contact me directly: walbren@tiscali.co.uk

I am a photographer concerned with making meditative work which (hopefully) opens up a greater spiritual sensibility towards the non-human. I am currently working on a piece of work around speaking with trees, my purpose in posting here is to seek a collaborator who is a sound artist/composer.

Along with exploring the core them of the wisdom of trees – metaphorically speaking, the conversation is obviously visual and in the imagination – I am also looking at ways of presenting work in ways which take the book concept into something digital and suitable for a COVID world. Its led me to be experimenting with av sequences, but very much with a sequence controlled by the viewer.

This viewer control has led me to being aware of the deafening silence that exists when it’s just pictures. It’s overpowering. Quite unlike looking at book in silence. However as soon as you introduce sound, you add another dimension and – the penny has finally dropped – you can’t get away from the fact that the sound is an integral part of the performance. I am therefore thinking in terms of looking for a genuine collaboration where the final av sequence is a joint effort between me, as photographer, and a sound artist/composer.

Is there anyone interested out there, interested in collaboration and interested in stimulating Joe Public to engage more spiritually and emotionally with nature?

I am not looking to commission a piece of work or whatever. What I have in mind demands joint effort. I also can’t offer money directly – though would not be averse to trying to seek money if a collaboration was looking mutually interesting. I can offer, I think, a very different audience for a sound collaborator work than I would have thought you were used to.

To give some idea where I’m currently at I’ve put a link below to a demo which I’ve lodged on my OneDrive. I used the music of Lawrence English as the background – currently best I can find, something along the lines I have in mind but very openminded. I am moving away from my usual contemplative stuff to something that has a more unsettling feeling about. Disturbed, but meditative. The problems we have are becoming urgent!!! The idea of the whole work Is that it evolves organically through experimentation and exploration of both actual places and image/sound editing and sequencing.

Best thing is to download the file then just double click. Will run direct from OneDrive but not good unless your internet is super fast (mine isn’t!) ! Should open directly from the download as slideshow which you then run manually with left mouse or forward/back keyboard buttons. Music should start with first picture. Silence before that!!

Please get in touch if you are interested or would simply like to ask more. Please use the contact function on my website www.spiritoftheland.co.uk
