We are excited to be able to offer creative commissions as part of our Delia Derbyshire Day 2023 Doctor Who 60th anniversary heritage project supported by National Lottery Heritage Fund. You will collaborate with a visual based artist to create an exciting new work inspired by Doctor Who, Delia Derbyshire, the Delia Derbyshire archive and Delia’s work on the original Doctor Who theme in 1963. You don’t even have to like Doctor Who, we’re welcome to critical reflections and different perspectives.
The work will be premiered online as part of DD Day 2023 (23 November 2023) and further performance/screening opportunities could be offered. You need to show understanding of Delia’s work and working methods – you can research Delia online. We want you to be bold and dedicated to your craft, like Delia was.
In collaboration with a mid-career visual based artist, you will produce a new work (approx 5 mins) inspired by Delia and Doctor Who. You will interact with the Delia Derbyshire Archive at John Rylands Research Institute and Library, Manchester. We have a strict “no sampling” policy of the archive, so your new work will be yours while being inspired and informed by Delia and Doctor Who.
Payment of £1500 includes all costs for the production and presentation of your new collaborative work on DD Day 2023 (online and possibly live in-person event), a blog post and other accompanying content. Further performance/screening opportunities will be paid separately. If you have access costs, please feel free to discuss this with us.
We are interested in supporting exciting new work, inviting nourishing exchanges between artists. We welcome your ideas on what you want to produce and how you want to present it. We want to support women* identifying artists who would consider themselves mid-career ie. with at least 7 years’ experience in their artform.
