The International Society for Contemporary Music (ISCM) is an international network of members from around fifty countries, devoted to the promotion and presentation of new and contemporary music. Sound and Music represents the British Section of the ISCM and supports British composers to have work performed at the annual ISCM World Music Days Festival.
Following a competitive application process, the ISCM British Section Board have selected the 6 composers who will be submitted to the ISCM International Jury for consideration. At least 1 will be selected for performance at the festival in September 2021. The shortlisted composers are:
“I’m thrilled that my solo piano piece ‘Unknown’ written for Claudia Racovicean, as part of the Riot Ensemble’s 2020 Zeitgeist Commissions has been shortlisted for the British section at the ISCM World Music Days 2021.”
“It is fantastic news to have been shortlisted for the British Section of the ISCM World New Music Day Festival 2021 in Shanghai/Nanning and I am absolutely delighted.”
“I am deeply honoured and grateful to the ISCM British Section for shortlisting my work Shuāng Miàn Xiù [Two-faced Tapestry]. This has allowed for some of my international work to reach our home audience for which I am most thankful. I hope the work can extend its cultural reach to the rest of the world should it be chosen for performance at this year’s ISCM Festival in China.”
“It comes as a welcome surprise to find that my composition Squally Breeze Caresses Glistening Sea has been shortlisted for the ISCM World New Music Days Festival 2021. My sincere gratitude to the ISCM British Section judges for deeming my work deserving of a broader audience. I hope the final international jury may feel the same way – it would be lovely to hear my work performed by full Chinese orchestra at the festival this summer.”
“I was very glad to find out that my piece Grin would be brought to the ISCM jury representing Britain. A huge factor towards this inclusion must surely be the recording of the truly intense performance by the Britten Sinfonia and Thomas Gould, which gave the piece an energy I never could have imagined while writing it.”
“It’s exciting to have my piece shortlisted for the ISCM British section with a piece for Chinese and western instruments that explores the balance and play of repetition. I’m grateful to Sound and Music for the opportunity and their continuing support for UK composers.”
