The COVID-19 Composer Awards

Sound and Music has repurposed the existing Francis Chagrin Award in order to respond to the needs of the composer community during this unprecedented emergency to create the COVID-19 Composer Awards. The awards will support UK-based composers and music creators who have lost work due to the COVID-19 crisis to undertake creative or professional development.

This is not a hardship fund. It seeks to award, in the first instance, 10 small-scale grants of £500 to composers and music creators looking to develop skills during this time of quarantine, particularly with a view to supporting longer-term sustainability.

We are actively fundraising to enable us to provide more awards. If you have the means, please donate to the award in order to help composers through this really difficult and challenging time. 100% of your donation will go directly to the selected composers.

Who can apply?

Composers and artists are eligible to apply who:

are based in the UK (for at least 2 years) or a British Citizen
• are not studying full time
• are not receiving regular income during the COVID-19 crisis
• are not currently participating in a Sound and Music programme

Examples of costs for which the Award may be used include:

• an online course
• a programme of coaching sessions
• acquiring and learning a new software package
• a self-directed learning project

About the COVID-19 Composer Awards

Over the past 10 years, the Francis Chagrin Award has helped numerous composers with small grants towards their work. In this time of need we are repurposing this established award and expanding our offer, so that we can better support composers affected by the current crisis. Through this, we hope to ensure more composers can continue their vital creative work.
