In the Making is a young artist development programme and the UK's only year-long programme for talented young music creators and composers aged 14–18.
The 12-month programme brings together 50 young music creators from across the UK, helping them develop their composing, recording, and performing skills while building confidence, experience, and creative ambition. Guided by leading composers and tutors, they explore new possibilities in music and take meaningful steps toward their artistic and professional goals.
This page provides a more detailed description of In the Making to help you understand what is involved in taking part and whether this is the right programme for you.
We are a National Youth Music Organisation and In the Making is made possible with the generous support of Arts Council England, Steinberg, Faber Music and Manners McDade, The Three Monkies Trust, The Patricia Routledge Foundation, John Thaw Foundation and The Hyne Trust.

What should I expect?
Key tutor sessions
During the Residency Phase at the University of Huddersfield, you will join a group of between 8-15 young people led by an accomplished Key Tutor, supported by a team of Assistant Tutors. Your Key Tutor will support you through creating a new work, support a process of your work being workshopped with our Ensemble in Residence, and your work during the residential will be showcased at the end of the Residency Phase. During the Development Phase, you will join online sessions with your Key Tutor to continue developing your work.
Ensemble in residence
Each year, we have a talented ensemble resident for the Residency Phase at the University of Huddersfield. They will be working with all the key tutor groups, recording materials, rehearsing compositions, giving feedback, and helping bring your work to life. They will perform all the composed pieces at the showcase at the end of the Residency Phase, and you will have a high-quality audio recording of your work to take away with you at the end.
Career and industry workshops
We welcome industry partners and experts to lead sessions focused on careers and the music industry. In the past, these sessions have included discussions on pathways into music education, workshops led by emerging composers showcasing their practice, and insights from partners and industry leaders such as Steinberg, composers from our In Motion artist development programme, and university professors.
Accommodation and food
All participants in the Residency Phase will be accommodated within easy reach of the University of Huddersfield. We will provide transport between the accommodation and the University and all meals will be included as part of the course (note: if you are a local resident and attending the Residency Phase on a day-time basis, only lunch will be provided). Trained pastoral staff will be staying in separate rooms at the same accommodation, and staff will always be available on-site to provide support and assistance whenever needed.
Safeguarding
The health, safety, and wellbeing of our participants are our top priorities. We take safeguarding seriously and have well-established codes of conduct in place to ensure clear expectations and processes for supporting everyone’s safety and wellbeing. Our dedicated pastoral staff are fully familiar with In the Making and are committed to creating a safe and supportive environment for all.
The Designated Safeguarding Officer for Sound and Music is Laonikos Psimikakis Chalkokondylis, Head of Programmes, and the Deputy Designated Safeguarding Officer is Finn Grant, Head of External Engagement. Every member of staff working with Sound and Music has undergone an Enhanced DBS check and completed safeguarding training prior to the residential.
