Sound and Music’s Seed Award brings together a diverse group of composers, each with a unique voice and vision. This Q&A series offers a glimpse into their creative worlds, revealing their musical influences, current projects, and aspirations for the future.

Here, we speak to Seed Award 2024 composer David Sappa.

Can you tell us about your musical influences?

My influences are quite amorphous and weird. I think curious – failing – changing things, the ways humans have used entrainment for millennia, being a bit lost, materials + D.I.Y cultures and things like that.

What are you working on at the moment?

I’m working on some animistic sound sculptures from lots of centuries old waste that I’ve been gathering over the past few years. I’ll be performing with them at HCMF this year.

An ongoing collaboration with artist Caitlin Kiely – we’re working on a cassette/visual essay/sound pieces and a few other things.

My friend Nouria Bah is releasing an EP soon which I’ve played on and done some artwork for, that’ll be released in August.
