To celebrate the selection of this year’s New Voices cohort, we caught up with all the selected artists and composers for a quick chat.

Here, we speak to New Voices 2022 composer Jelly Cleaver.

Can you tell us about your musical influences?

I have a pretty wide range of influences. I mostly work in the jazz scene and my influences include Pharoah Sanders, Alice Coltrane, John Coltrane and the Mahavishnu Orchestra. I’m also influenced by the London post-punk scene and the many varied sounds coming from there.

What are you working on at the moment?

I have just finished composing new work for a Black History Month Celebration, with pieces inspired by lesser known black liberation groups, such as those fighting for transgender rights, animal rights and worker solidarity within the movement.

What are you looking forward to most about New Voices?

I’m really looking forward to getting a space and resources that will help me to challenge myself creatively. I’m looking forward to having my horizons broadened and trying things I never dreamed of before.
