Open call to produce a sound art/audio work and associated audio materials with Exeter residents for broadcast as part of River Radio.

Fee: £1,000 (based on 3-4 days work, including any travel and other costs incurred by the artist to produce the sound artwork, paid on completion).

Location: Exeter and/or managed through online/remote engagement.

Deadline for applications: Sunday 11th August

Appointment announced: Friday 16th August

Delivery Timeframe: 23rd August – 15th September

Context: Art Work Exeter are inviting applications from sound artists to create a recorded audio work with Exeter residents for broadcast during River Radio – a community radio project broadcasting 60 hours of continuous programming from Exeter Custom House 13th – 15th September 2024. The full River Radio programme will contain sound art, citizen science, environmental investigations, maritime and industrial history, community voices, live DJs and further explorations of the sounds and stories around the River Exe. More information about the project can be found at: https://artworkexeter.org.uk/projects/river-radio/

This small commission is for the design and delivery of a new audio work that is themed around and explores the river Exe in situ as it meets the Exeter Quayside, and which involves Exeter residents in its production.

The audio work and its process should respond to themes and sites suggested by of the River Radio project – the River Exe, the Exeter Custom House which stands next to the river on the Inland Harbour of Exeter Quayside, trade and exchange, customs and duties, global routes and connections, travel and transport, sediment and catchment, life in, on or beside the river etc. We acknowledge that all rivers flow into all seas and that the same water has been on this planet since it was formed, cycling through our bodies, those of other-than-humans and the landscapes that we inhabit. We are interested to hear your interpretations and to expand our own expectations.

Art Work Exeter is running this commission in partnership with The Cultural Knowledge Exchange – an advisory group of diverse individuals that support our ambitions to promote inclusive arts and cultural opportunities within the community by offering insights and perspectives that might not be available within the organisation itself. We are actively seeking to work with artists who will cultivate cultural conversation about the River Exe and the expression of a variety of cultural perspectives through their work with Exeter residents. The Cultural Knowledge Exchange will be integral to the appointment process.

Given the size of the fee, we imagine this to be a light interaction that is an extension or deeper exploration of processes and/or themes that you are already engaged with, and that are achievable within the time outlined.

The expectation for delivery is:

  • You will be expected to provide audio materials (process, research, conversation) to ‘bookend’ the sound artwork into a minimum one hour long programme for River Radio, pre-made by you or broadcast live by you depending on the idea.
  • 4-6 hours of artist-led workshop activity/interaction with Exeter residents that explores and records sound materials related to project themes outlined. Recordings made in the workshops/interactions should be part of the finished work.
  • Workshop activity should ideally take place between 23rd August – 5th September, with a deadline for the delivery of the finished work on 9th September. Although we are also open to short, in-situ processes that are composed within and run over the time of the Heritage Open Days 6th – 15th September 2024 for broadcast between 13th – 15th September.
  • You will need to hold appropriate Public Liability insurance for any activity you propose to conduct with participants.
  • Recording, editing and mastering of the final sound artwork and all additional, recorded sound materials is the artist’s responsibility.

Art Work Exeter will provide:

  • Access to community groups and support the recruitment of participants, plus provide the online platform for engagement if required.
  • A team member to help manage in situ/online participant involvement at workshops.
  • An artistic and radio experienced sounding board to help meet project ambitions.

To apply, please send us:

  • A letter of interest (one side of A4) or short video statement telling us about – you and your sound art/audio practice, why you are interested in the commission, what your ideas are for the project – theme, form and approach, how you want to involve Exeter residents in the process and what you think they might get out of the experience.
  • Artist weblinks or a CV and a link to one soundwork for us to listen to.
