Surround Sound: Sharon Gal / Moshi Honen / Kathy Hinde

A unique, immersive experience brings together three experimental composers/performers to engage with Café OTO’s surround sound system.

A concert of live composition, improvisation and bespoke musical instrumentation; presenting three solo sets, each with its own distinct sound world and original spatial approach.

1st set – Sharon Gal summons a soundscape woven with the essence of bygone spirits and ritual. Her voice guides the piece, incorporating other voices and complemented by field recordings, electronics and sound objects, adding tactile, earthly textures. The performance, spatialized in collaboration with Café OTO’s sound technician and artist Rory Slater, creates a deeply immersive, resonating journey that feels both haunting and transformative.

2nd set – Moshi Honen: Hex Guitar is a six channel guitar. Each string is amplified separately and positioned in a surround configuration creating a unique hexaphonic listening experience. This performance will present a solo piece composed specifically for this instrument.

3rd set – Kathy Hinde will perform a new 8 channel version of her piece Magnetic Resonance, a trio of illuminated sonic pendulums set into motion by the invisible push and pull of magnetic fields, inspired by the mysterious ways birds navigate using the Earth’s magnetic field.

Magnetic Resonance was developed and supported on a research residency at iii (Instrument inventors) in The Hague, NL during spring 2024 with further development from Arts Council England DYCP programme.
