Designed to overwhelm soloists, we premiere a series of anti-concertos by British modern classical composers Laurence Osborn, Hannah Kendall and others on the importance of being heard, exploring how voices that should be raised can be hidden or obscured.
In these ‘anti-concertos’, solo instruments are overwhelmed at points by the nature of their solo and other members of the ensemble. The work highlights the necessity of listening and being heard in a crowd of voices.
Osborn’s work is presented alongside shouting forever into the receiver by Hannah Kendall. This is the UK premiere of the composition which received an Ivor Novello Award in 2023 for Best Large Ensemble Work. Taking its title from a line in Ocean Vuong’s novel On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous, Kendall finds meditation and stillness in an instrument associated with Afro-diasporic sorrow.
