Scottish star percussionist Colin Currie brings a uniquely sparkling quartet programme featuring two world premieres, and three Scots composers.
Anna Meredith and Colin were in the same wind band at their Edinburgh high school and have always kept in touch. This concert sees their first professional collaboration and harnesses the brazen eccentricity of her Dodgem Studies in a whizzingly upbeat new version for Colin’s quartet, a Kings Place commission for Scotland Unwrapped. Ben Nobuto’s premiere promises to be the perfect companion to Meredith – his style is snappy, witty and often alarming, dextrous and distinctive. Steve Reich’s much-loved Mallet Quartet is contrasted with a new work by Aileen Sweeney, whose edgy, dancy, contrapuntal music is infused with her traditional Scottish folk background and the evening opens with a virtuoso work for solo marimba by fellow Scot David Horne.
This event will last approximately 2 hours, including an interval.
