Ramani Langley has been welcomed as the new Chair of the Board of Trustees for Sound and Music and took up her post yesterday at the charity’s Board meeting.

Ramani brings over 25 years of leadership and business experience to the role spanning the tech, finance and business sectors, including Director of Consulting Services at the global IT consulting firm CGI

She also brings a wealth of trustee experience from the voluntary sector to Sound and Music’s Board including serving as Chair of the Board of Trustees at LinkAble, a learning disability charity.

Ramani is a passionate and classically trained musician, choral and opera singer holding both ABRSM and Trinity diplomas. She is a librettist and the founder of Not Just Opera, an organisation that seeks to make opera more representative and accessible.

Commenting on her motivations to take up the post Ramani said:

“I’m passionate about creating opportunities for musicians and composers and increasing access and representation in music. Sound and Music is a unique organisation and vital in supporting careers, progressing creativity and increasing equity in music in the UK. I already feel a personal connection with the organisation having sung a piece by Ben Nobuto, one of Sound and Music’s brilliant alumni composers at the First Night of the Proms this year. I am very proud to be taking up this position and am looking forward to getting started and bringing my expertise to Sound and Music as the organisation delivers its ambitious new strategy to grow its reach, influence and impact as the driving force for new music in the UK.”

The Chief Executive of Sound and Music, Dr Will Dutta, welcomed Ramani to the board, saying:

“The Board and staff team are all thrilled to have Ramani Langley join our experienced Board of Trustees as Chair succeeding Dr Greg Davies whose six-year term has come to an end.

Ramani brings an exciting combination of business mindset and practical music-making experience, which will be incredibly valuable in the coming period, particularly as we develop new programmes, platforms and partnerships to continually champion greater opportunity and equity in music in the UK. That she has also performed in one of our beneficiary’s works at the First Night of the Proms is a wonderful piece of serendipity.”

Will also bids farewell to our outgoing chair, Greg Davies, saying:

“I’d like to thank Greg Davies for his unwavering commitment to the charity, leading us through the pandemic and a challenging funding environment, and as we boldly transformed our organisation and set our new strategic roadmap. As in any production, so much takes place behind the scenes. It’s testament to his leadership that Sound and Music is now in a strong position to offer life-changing opportunities to so many musical creators and champion new music and scenes reflective of the wonderful diversity of the UK.”
