We’re delighted to announce that our new national artist development programmes In the Making, for composers aged 14-18, and In Motion, for those aged 18 and over, are now open for applications and registration respectively.
In the Making and In Motion respond to the changing ecosystem within new music and replace previous programmes including New Voices and Composer-Curator. Building on Sound and Music’s 15 years’ experience supporting creatives to make new music, these new programmes will create a dynamic space for individuals to design and embark on their own creative journey.
Running in parallel, In the Making and In Motion will foster an active community by connecting composers across both programmes, equipping individuals to share their creative knowledge, skills and enthusiasms.
In the Making is a trailblazing 12 month programme supporting 50 composers aged 14-18 to grow in confidence and expand their skills and creative ambition. In the Making supports anyone interested in working with music and sound through a diverse range of opportunities which have been developed together with the Young Voices advisory group. These include Sound and Music’s annual Composition School residential, online skills sessions and networking opportunities. It is the only programme of its kind in the UK supporting young composers.
In the Making is now open for applications. The deadline for applications is 30 April 2024 at 23:59.
In Motion is an artist development programme for anyone aged 18 and over working with music and sound in the UK. In Motion is artist-led and celebrates the curious and intrepid. Over 18 months, 10 composers will be supported to design and undertake their own creative journey and to experiment with new ways in how they make work and sustain their career. During the programme, composers will be given financial support, opportunities to explore new contexts for their work, and guidance from accredited coaches and Sound and Music’s expert team.
In Motion is now open for registration. The deadline for registration is 10 January at 23:59.
“We are thrilled to announce the launch of our two new programmes for composers at all stages in their artistic development. When the power of music to change the lives of young people is widely acknowledged but under-resourced; and the UK’s music industry is recognised globally but investment in innovation is scarce, In the Making and In Motion are transformational opportunities for those beginning their creative journey or looking to bring their creative frontier closer.”
