WHAT IS LCO NEW?
LCO New offers a nurturing and high profile opportunity for 5 emerging composers. The scheme takes place over 4 months from June-September ’22. Participants will take part in 3 collaborative group workshops in central London with LCO’s 21/22 Composer in Residence, Freya Waley-Cohen.
We want to help a range of composers at an early stage in their careers, who have never heard their work performed by professional musicians. You might not have ever written for an orchestra before or perhaps want to develop your orchestral writing skills.
Each workshop will give participants the opportunity to work with Freya and LCO musicians, including a full Chamber orchestra for the final session to each compose a new piece for LCO.
At the end of the programme, all 5 new pieces will be performed at LCO’s opening concert of the 22/23 Season, which will also be recorded.
LCO New participants will form a network of LCO New alumni. Our alumni will enjoy an ongoing relationship with LCO, access to our our pre-concert events and LCO rehearsals of new works by our annual Composer in Residence, as well as the opportunity to sit in on future LCO New workshops. We are keen to continue our relationship with all alumni, by supporting and promoting you and your work.

IS LCO NEW FOR ME?
You can apply if:
- You are aged 16+ (there is no upper age limit)
- You’ve not had your compositions performed by a professional orchestra before
- You are a resident of UK

DO I HAVE TO PAY ANYTHING?
There is no application fee and the scheme is free to all participants
We aim to make our course as accessible as possible. So, LCO will be able to provide successful participants a contribution to travel and/or childcare costs
HOW DO I APPLY?
You will need to submit:
– TWO audio recordings
These do not have to be new pieces, but should represent your musical influences and compositional style. Compositions will not be judged on the quality of the audio recording. If you need help creating an audio file, please email hattie@lco.co.uk
You will not need to submit a written score, or need to answer any questions!
We will also encourage you complete an Equal Opportunities Monitoring Form. Gathering this data helps us to understand who we are reaching and the appeal of the scheme to different groups of people. This helps us to make informed improvements in future years.

WHO’S ON THE LCO NEW SUBMISSION REVIEWING PANEL?
WHAT DOES THE PANEL DO?
The LCO panel have been chosen for their skills in composition and range of compositional approaches.
The panel will listen to all submitted audio recordings and mark on quality of the composition and potential of the composer.
All applications will be anonymised for the panel for the first round, so that they can focus on the music. This removes unconscious bias.

The highest scoring applicants will be shortlisted. Where scoring is equal, those from under-represented groups will be given priority, in line with our positive action commitments. The panel will reconvene to select the final 5 applications.
