Sound and Music’s In Motion programme brings together a diverse group of composers, each with a unique voice and vision. This Q&A series offers a glimpse into their creative worlds.

Here, we speak to In Motion 2025 composer Shamica Ruddock

How would you describe your creative process?

A series of misfortunate events.

What’s a piece of advice you’ve received that’s stuck with you?

Take away, don’t add.

What’s your relationship with improvisation, and how does it shape your work?

It’s interesting because I do have a shared project elsewhere that is always completely improvised. But then within my own solo work it leans more into the structured, but with elements of improvisation. But maybe sometimes I do feel held back within that structure.

Something I’m currently thinking through, and definitely trying to negotiate, is how to honour this structured element, which has its place, but lean more into this spirit of improvisation in the solo performance in the same way I do the shared, because I think overall I do feel a home in this space of the unpredictable.

There’s also probably something in here somewhere about feeling safe to surrender completely to an improvised approach, and perhaps in this shared context there’s someone there to lean on and help make sense of the chaos improvisation can birth, but in the solo it’s just myself so the structure ends up being the sense maker. But at the moment I am like, slowly trying to break away from this structure but, guess we’ll see how that goes. It’s a process right?

What are you looking forward to most about In Motion?

I often find myself with a few projects always on the go and sometimes things get forgotten about, or a bit neglected, so I’m mostly looking forward to spending some dedicated time with a solo project that has perhaps been simmering on the backburner for a while, time to move it to that front burner. Also setting some intentions for myself and attempting to honour that, and bringing some rigour to the table. Also just a journey into the unknown…. with some support. That’s always nice.
