Sound and Music’s In Motion programme brings together a diverse group of composers, each with a unique voice and vision. This Q&A series offers a glimpse into their creative worlds.

Here, we speak to In Motion 2025 composer Nichola Scrutton.

What’s your relationship with improvisation, and how does it shape your work?

As a composer, performer and artist, improvisation is an integral aspect of my work – a live, dynamic experience within a practice that spans a range from highly composed projects to free improvisation.

What’s a sound you’ve heard recently that fascinated you?

All sounds fascinate, right now, the squeak of a wheel on a trolley going past.

What does collaboration mean to you, and how do you approach working with others?

I have extensive experience as a collaborator in a range of contexts. I have an open, flexible approach, and appreciate the gifts and challenges that collaboration offers.

What are you looking forward to most about In Motion?

Thinking about the practice from different perspectives, new connections and conversations, making new work.
