Open Call: Choir Directors – Are you Interested in Premiering/Video recording a new Choral Work?
Type: Funding (£1,250 – £1,500)
Interest Areas: SATB/Choral/A Cappella/Traditional/New Music/Choir Director
10th July 2022 for responses. (31th December 2022 for completed video recordings, although the video deadline could be extended into early 2023 for an exceptional choir, whereupon video recordings may be sufficient even without a public performance.)
Talented and enthusiastic choral director required to provide technical advice, direct rehearsals, and arrange for performance and video recordings of a new choral work: Ring Out, Ye Bells! (A Christmas carol set in the traditional style).
Ring Out, Ye Bells! Is scored for SATB a cappella choir (with occasional voice divisions). It is a short piece (approx. 3 minutes: 40”) composed in 2021 and set to the text Christmas Carol by Paul Laurence Dunbar (1872-1906). This is a unique opportunity to stamp your own individual mark on this new work and to perform the premiere. The composer will liaise online with a dedicated choral director (occasionally using Zoom or Skype link-up meetings during rehearsals etc.). The director will be responsible for arranging the video recordings of his/her finished and rehearsed performances of the piece (2 or 3 separate performance recordings from different angles will be required for video editing and final video creation purposes). The composer will arrange to have the supplied video recordings edited and will arrange production of the final completed video. Additionally (and subject to suitably high quality HD audio/video recordings being supplied) the video performance may be advertised for publicity in BBC Music Magazine or similar music magazine(s) and/or website(s).
If you are interested in this opportunity please email: email@example.com giving your website details and links to video recordings of some of your most recent choral performances, please also give a little background about yourself and your choir.
Choral directors and choirs from all backgrounds are invited to apply; selection will include:
- Performance experience, technical expertise and professionalism
- Choir size (preferably 20+) and availability (could your choir include this piece in its programme and/or video record it this year?)
- Music training/qualifications/membership to choral associations etc.
- Proposed performance space (Practice studio, Hall, Church, Cathedral etc.)
- Proposed video recording method(s) and equipment (only needs to be a good quality HD audio/video recording, not necessarily a finished professional recording as further video editing will subsequently be carried out).
Further details about this work including a SATB perusal score (scroll to bottom of the page and see under Details/View Score) and a digital recording (piano for rehearsal only) can be found at:
Please only respond if: you have looked through the full perusal score and are confident your choir is large enough and can comfortably perform this piece. And appreciating the 31st December deadline is quite tight, that you/they can dedicate the necessary time to rehearse sufficiently to have the piece performance ready by the end of the year (preferably), or early next.
Many thanks for showing an interest in this opportunity and music.
