Fifteen-Minutes-of-Fame featuring soprano Coco Lau
Vox Novus is honored to announce a Fifteen-Minutes-of-Fame call for scores featuring the distinguished soprano Coco Lau. Renowned for her exceptional artistry, technical virtuosity, and compelling stage presence, Ms. Lau has captivated audiences worldwide with her dedication to the performance of contemporary music and her deep commitment to the art of storytelling through song.
This special edition invites composers to contribute one-minute works that explore the profound and multifaceted journey of motherhood. Themes may range from the initial hopes and uncertainties of conception, to the awe and wonder of nurturing life, the poignant separation at birth, and the bittersweet evolution of independence. Composers are encouraged to craft pieces that embody emotional depth, dramatic intensity, and innovation, showcasing Ms. Lau’s extraordinary vocal range and interpretive prowess.
Composers are encouraged to create dramatic pieces utilizing sprechgesang, half-voice,airy, whispers, whistling, tongue clicks, inhaling, non-vocal sounds, microtones, and other extended vocal techniques.
Coco Lau’s voice range is from B3-D6.
The 15 works will be specifically filmed to create atmosphere and context for Coco Lau to inhabit and emote the meaning and drama of the 60 second composition.
Only works one-minute in length for solo soprano will be considered. Deadline for submissions is June 1st, 2025.
These works must be dedicated to “Michelle To” the mother of Coco Lau
Guidelines:
- Works are for soprano solo without accompaniment only.
- Works should be composed specifically for this call and performer.
- Deadline for submissions is June 1st, 2025
- All pieces must be premieres and not previously written or performed.
- No works over a minute will be reviewed.
- Composers should use texts in the public domain. Texts not in the public domain need permission from the author stated in the score.
- Multiple submissions are not accepted. Send your best work!
- Works need to be submitted online at http://www.musicavatar.org
- You will need to register with Music Avatar for free to submit your work online.
- After logging in to Music Avatar, select the opportunity named “Fifteen-Minutes-of-Fame featuring Coco Lau” and press the “submit” button to start the submission process.
- You will need to provide a maximum 50 word biography and 50 word program notes.
- You will be able to upload a score as a PDF file (You may also upload an audio file; however, it is not required.)
- Must include the dedication to Coco Lau’s mother “Michelle To” on the score.
- Performance notes should be included in the score.

About Coco Lau:
Coco Lau is the first singer from Hong Kong to specialize in contemporary music. Trained in both classical and contemporary styles in Europe, she is recognized as one of the most devoted and passionate contemporary singers of her generation. Her precise musicality and commanding stage presence have earned her the opportunity to deliver world premieres by esteemed composers such as Ying Wang (Grey Hair, 2024) and Maximiliano Soto Mayorga (Medea Fragments, 2024).
Lau holds two master’s degrees from the Mozarteum University Salzburg: an Master of Arts in Voice with Michèle Crider and an Master of Music in Contemporary Music with Lisa Fornhammar. During her studies, she worked with prominent figures such as Adriana Hölszky, Carola Bauckholt, Manos Tsangaris, Jörn Peter Hiekel, and Marino Formenti.
Lau has received the Opera Hong Kong Scholarship and the Yasumoto Scholarship for Musicians. She was a finalist in the Sir Ian Stoutzker Prize and a semi-finalist at the John Cage Award in Halberstadt. Additionally, she has participated in masterclasses with Edith Wiens, Wolfgang Holzmair, Gerd Uecker, Angelika Luz, and Donatienne Michel-Dansac.

Fifteen-Minutes-of-Fame gives a variety of new music by living composers to audiences hungry to hear what is being created in today’s music scene. The Fifteen-Minutes-of-Fame project has featured more than 75 musician/ensembles premiering the works of over 1000 composers.
