Beamsplitter is a duo for amplified voice, trombone and occasional analog electronics. Utilising the pure sounds of acoustic and closely amplified sources, they create a dialogue that moves beyond the corporeal elements of extended technique and sound. There is intimacy and conflict as the two personas intertwine — in moments joining seamlessly, in others leaving the feeling of irrevocable fracture. Their improvisations reveal an improvised grace, an effort towards a common goal, where even serene moments can leave one raw and exposed.
Audrey Chen
Vocalist and cellist working primarily with the unprocessed voice. Chen’s practice explores timbre, texture and extended techniques, creating visceral and deeply physical performances.
Henrik Munkeby Nørstebø
Norwegian trombonist working at the intersection of acoustic sound and electronics. His work pushes the instrument into amplified, distorted and abstract territory, bridging improvisation, noise and sound art.
Since beginning their collaboration in 2015, Chen and Nørstebø have toured extensively across Europe, New Zealand, Argentina, Brazil, Taiwan and the USA, presenting their work in a wide variety of contexts. They have taken part in larger commissions such as Medea (with butoh dancers and musicians, produced by Ukho Agency in Kiev), and collaborations with Phil Minton, Bob Ostertag, Michael Vorfeld, Thomas Rohrer, Valentin Tszin, and Streifenjunko.
“Beamsplitter is highly improvised, extremely crafted and held in an iron will for experimentation.”
– Jean Louis Fernandez, La Nacion, Buenos Aires, 2016
