VII ST. PETERSBURG INTERNATIONAL NEW MUSIC FESTIVAL

 

The Saint-Petersburg Contemporary Music Center «reMusik.org» announces the VII St. Petersburg International New Music Festival, taking place from May 25th — 31st, 2020. Within the framework of the 2020 festival, reMusik.org offers a Composition Course which will be held from May 21st — June 1st in St. Petersburg, Russia. This creative composing lab is an exciting opportunity for young and emerging composers from around the world. Thirty-six composers will be selected through a portfolio application process to meet and work with renowned composers and internationally acclaimed ensembles invited to this year’s festival.

During the 10 days, the Composition Course gives participants access to distinguished composers, concerts, and masterclasses while affording each participant ample time to compose in a relaxed environment and enjoy the famous White Nights Season in St. Petersburg, Russia!

The festival will be held in distinguished venues around the city, including the Mariinsky Theatre Concert Hall, the New Stage of the Alexandrinsky Theater, the St. Petersburg State Philharmonic, St. Petersburg State Conservatory, Masterskaya M. K. Anikushina and St. John’s Church Jaani Kirik. 

Internationally renowned musical collectives will be performing, such as Saint Petersburg State Symphony Orchestra (Russia), Les Percussions de Strasbourg (France), Adapter (Germany), Lemniscate (Switzerland), Moscow Contemporary Music Ensemble (Russia), defunensemble (Finland), Trio SÆTENWIND (Switzerland), Duo Mixed Sound Personnel (Germany) and more. Along with traditional concerts the festival will be additionally offering master classes, scientific conference, presentations, forum, educational lectures and workshops.

DATES

The program will run from May 21st (Arrival Date) — June 1st (Departure Date), 2020 in Saint-Petersburg, Russia

 

APPLICATION DEADLINE

Group A: 15th February 2020 (The results will be announced on February 20th, 2020);

Group B: 15th March 2020 (The results will be announced on March 20th, 2020);

Group C: 10th April 2020 (The results will be announced on April 13th, 2020);

Free Auditors: 15th May 2020.

ELIGIBILITY 

All composers age 18 and over

 

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES 

All applications must be submitted online through application form on https://en.remusik.org/academy/courses/composition/

 

The jury will select 36 composers into three groups*: Group A, Group B and Group C. Each group gives participants a possibility to advance their skills through the following opportunities:

Group A

- Minimum 3 hours of individual lessons with 3 different tutors** (Each lesson is 1 hour);

- Performance and professional recording of their work at one of the festival concerts;

- 45-minutes presentation of their work;

- Access to all events and concerts.

 

Group B

- Minimum 3 hours of individual lessons with 3 different tutors** (Each lesson is 1 hour);

- Performance a part of their work during 1—2 workshops/reading sessions with ensembles-in-residence or symphonic orchestra;

- 45-minutes presentation of their work;

- Access to all events and concerts.

 

Group C

- Minimum 3 hours of individual lessons with 3 different tutors** (Each lesson is 1 hour);

- 45-minutes presentation of their work;

- Access to all events and concerts.

 

Free Auditors

This is a great opportunity for anyone wanting to learn from the accomplished artists and be immersed within the excitement of the Festival. Auditors will additionally have access to all educational events (lessons, workshops, lectures).

 

*You may apply for multiple selection groups. reMusik.org reserves the right to choose more or less participants than it’s announced.

** Participants will have individual lessons with 3 or 4 different tutors.

 

SUPPLEMENTAL MATERIALS

In addition to the application form, please submit the following:

Group A

 - 2-3 scores (submitted electronically in .pdf format via Dropbox, Google Drive or similar);

 - Recordings of 1-2 works (submitted electronically via Dropbox, Google Drive or similar);

 - Biography.

 

Composer should choose one of two following options of performance of his/her work during the festival:

● The composer agrees to write a new work for one of the ensembles invited to the festival (the lineup distribution will be made by reMusik.org, but participants wishes will be taken into account).

● The composer submits an existing pieces which never performed in Russia. At least one of the scores must be submitted for one of the following lineups:

– flute, clarinet, violin, viola, cello, piano, percussion (1-7 performers);

– flute, clarinet, violin, cello, piano (1-5 performers);

– flute, clarinet, harp, percussion (1-4 performers);

– flute, clarinet, cello (1-3 performers);

– cello, saxophone, accordion (1-3 performers);

– soprano, percussion (1-2 performers);

– cello and electronics.

 

Adding electronics to each lineup is possible, but before you submit your application, please send your technical rider to check the details.

The exact lineup of symphonic orchestra and percussion instruments is to be defined.

Composers admitted to the composition course (Group A) must send, no later than April, 1st, 2020, the score and the instrumental parts of the piece to be used for performance in the concert.

 

Group B

 - 2-3 scores (submitted electronically in .pdf format via Dropbox, Google Drive or similar);

 - Recordings of 1-2 works (submitted electronically via Dropbox, Google Drive or similar);

 - Biography.

 

Notes:

Applicants are requested to choose 4 instrumental lineups from the list below for participation in the workshops/reading sessions (the jury accepts 1 or 2 of them):

– symphonic orchestra;

– flute, clarinet, violin, viola, cello, piano, percussion (1-7 performers);

– flute, clarinet, violin, cello, piano (1-5 performers);

– flute, clarinet, harp, percussion (1-4 performers);

– percussion (1-4 performers)

– flute, clarinet, cello (1-3 performers);

– cello, saxophone, accordion (1-3 performers);

– soprano, percussion (1-2 performers).

 

Composers admitted to the workshop (Group B) must send, no later than April 20, 2020, the score and the instrumental parts of the piece to be used for participation in the workshop.

 

The exact lineup of symphonic orchestra and percussion instruments is to be defined.

 

Group C

 - 2-3 scores (submitted electronically in .pdf format via Dropbox, Google Drive or similar);

 - Recordings of 1-2 works (submitted electronically via Dropbox, Google Drive or similar);

 - Biography.

 

INCENTIVES

1— 3 Participants will be selected to be performed on the next Festival in 2021 and their work to be published by Edition reMusik.org.

 

PARTICIPATION FEE 

Group A: €590 

Group B: €450 

Group C: €290 

Free auditors: free

 

Payment can be made in two instalments: after selection results and upon arrival to Saint-Petersburg. 

There is no application fee.

 

REQUIREMENTS

- English Language 

- Foreign students will receive an official invitation to the festival from the Saint-Petersburg Contemporary Music Center "reMusik.org". Students living in countries that have visa services with the Russian Federation, must apply for their visa, independently, at the nearest embassy or consulate of the Russian Federation.

- Travel, housing, living costs and visa expenses are the individual responsibility of the participants and reMusik.org is not responsible for paying that.
