We’re looking for young MCs, producers, instrumentalists, vocalists and spoken word artists to join us for DISRUPT – an exciting new hip-hop project led by Balraj Samrai from Manchester’s award-winning Swing Ting party and record label.

Open to all genders, this is for artists aged 16-25 working towards a career in music, or those wanting to develop skills in collaboration, songwriting, production and live performance.

Sessions will be relaxed, supportive and free of charge.

What’s involved

Over five days, you’ll work with established artists and producers to create original music combininghip hop, electronics, spoken word and live instrumentation to represent themes of protest.

At the end of the week, you’ll take part in a special live performance at Radical Lates.

The theme

Words and music have always provided an essential outlet for people to have a voice – through hip hop, punk, folk and other genres and scenes across the world, influencing politics, society and change.

Past, present and future – DISRUPT will explore how music can be used as a powerful tool for protest, resistance and liberation.

This residency is based at People’s History Museum (PHM). In 2019 PHM are running a year-long programme to mark the 200th year since the Peterloo Massacre; a major event in Manchester’s history, and a defining moment for Britain’s democracy. You’ll use their current exhibition Disrupt? Peterloo and Protest as inspiration, along with your own personal experiences of protest.

“On this residency we’ll come together to explore how the themes of Peterloo resonate with you and the world we live in. This is your chance to be bold, expressive and create music without limits!” – Balraj Samrai
