The Composer Hub aims to support talented young composers aged 11-18 from the East of England. We strive to develop their creative, technical and stylistic skills through a programme of tailored compositional briefs, mentoring from renowned professionals, rehearsals, recordings and public performance opportunities. Each year the Hub is led by a different professional composer, who mentors the students and attends each of the orchestral projects. The Composer Hub attend one day of each orchestral course and are integrated with the players, taking part in group activities, warm ups and some rehearsals.

This year the hub has had the opportunity to learn from composers Sir James MacMillan, Edmund Finnis and Josephine Stephenson (who was commissioned to write for the main Academy orchestra). They have written a folk inspired string quartet, a short fanfare for performance in a museum, and a piece for full chamber orchestra which will be professionally recorded for their portfolio.

We welcome applicants who are: – Secondary school aged – based in the east of England – Dynamic and passionate musicians willing to challenge themselves – Willing to travel to courses across the east of England including Cambridge, Norwich, Saffron Walden and London
