NMSW Young Composers' Prize 2018

    The competition is open to young composers in (or from) the South West of England aged 15-19. University

    students are not eligible.

  2. Submissions can be in any genre.

  3. Submissions must be unpublished.

  4. Duration: approximately 2-5 minutes

  5. Pieces should be written for any combination or solo from the following group of instruments:

    Flute, Clarinet, Horn, Percussion (pitched and unhitched will be available, please enquire as to details)

    Piano 2 Violins, Viola, Cello

  6. Deadline for entry is Friday 6th July 2018

  7. Submissions should be made online via Dropbox (NB. you do not need your own Dropbox account) by going to:

http://bit.ly/2pefTGE or via WeTransfer (wetransfer.com) to info@nmsw.org.uk.

Submissions should consist of a folder containing: i. Score (Sibelius file preferred). This should not name you as the composer, instead you should use a codename. ii. A document including your codename, your real name, age, school, title of the piece, duration and a short programme note. Also include your email address. iii. If you have a recording of the piece please include this (Sibelius/computer realisations are acceptable).

Please ensure that the folder containing these files bears your codename.

NB. Shortlisted composers will be informed via email by the end of July, at which point they will be asked to prepare all necessary performance materials i.e. bound scores (two copies) and bound parts where necessary.


Three shortlisted pieces will be performed by Bristol Ensemble at the NMSW 2018 season finale, a major event staged in partnership with St. George’s, Bristol on Sunday 23rd September. At the conclusion of the concert, an overall winner will be announced and presented with the NMSW Young Composers’ Prize.

JURY Composer Dr Sadie Harrison, composer and NMSW Director Dr Julian Leeks and one additional new music
