Brighter Sound presents a very special five-day music studio residency with Mercury Prize-nominated and critically acclaimed band, Field Music.

Field Music brothers Peter and David Brewis will welcome ten emerging musicians and writers into their studio space in Sunderland from Monday 13 to Friday 17 November. Over five days they’ll explore the process of record-making, from writing the song, through to arrangement, engineering and production.

Successful applicants will work with Field Music, pulling apart and putting back together their own unfinished songs or loose ends, to create a distinct collaborative record.

Dubbed “Prince’s favourite pop duo” (Mojo), the esteemed Brewis brothers began making records as Field Music in 2005. With a Mercury Prize nomination for their 2012 album Plumb under their belt, Field Music have received critical acclaim for their distinct and adventurous approach to songwriting and collaboration. Alongside their five ‘proper’ album releases, they’ve recorded a collection of covers and B-sides, film scores and spin-off projects, The Week That Was and School of Language. Field Music have toured the world and worked with the likes of Slug, The Cornshed Sisters, Pea Sea, The Futureheads and Maximo Park. All of the brothers’ recordings have been made at their own studio space in Sunderland.

At some point, quite early on, we realised that no one was going to show us how to make the records we wanted to make – slowly and awkwardly we had to figure it out ourselves. I hope this project will be the kind of thing we needed back in 2001 – maybe a bit of inspiration, a few technical tips, a little kick up the arse and the fun of trying things out with a bunch of other musicians in a similar boat.” – David Brewis

Brighter Sound and Field Music are inviting applications from emerging musicians and writers of all genres who have an interest in record-making. We’re committed to greater cultural diversity and pluralism within our residencies and wider activity, and strongly encourage applications from female and minority candidates. All applications are judged primarily on musical merit.

Application deadline: Sun 8 Oct, midnight
