SaM Summer School 10th Birthday

Sam Summer School is turning 10

SaM Summer School is turning ten!

In 2018 SaM Summer School will be celebrating its 10th Birthday, and we want you to join the celebrations!

To honour SaM reaching double figures, in the lead up to the big day we will be releasing ten short videos that celebrate all the things that makes the Summer School so special - from the students, to the tutors and musicians as well as the fantastic facilities.

SaM is 10: "It simply could not be better" (#1)

In the first installment, Kuljit Bhamra - long serving SaM tutor - and Judith Weir - visiting tutor in 2016 - describe what they think makes the course so unique.

SaM is 10: "Really, ridiculously, awesome" (#2)

We asked ten former students about their favourite bits about the course.

About the Summer School

Back in 2009, Sound and Music created its annual SaM Summer School - for young composers and creative musicians, hosted at the celebrated and world renowned The Purcell School for young musicians.

Since then over 500 young composers, music creators and sound generators have been on our residency, for a unique week of experimentation, collaboration and learning.

Over these 10 years they have created over 2000 minutes of new music and developed their individual and artistic skills, from composing for voice to film, and they have been guided on this journey by some of the best tutors in the UK, and an array of national and international visiting tutors.

During the course of this life-changing week each young person recieves over 60 hours of tutoring (more than on an A-level music course!) and with a staffing ratio of one tutor to every three pupils, we ensure each young person gains a breadth of experience, support and advice, whilst exploring their unique style.

The week culminates in special live performances where their creations are played and realised by world class musicians.

‘Without this course I would never have realized that I could be a composer’ - SaM Alumni

These young people go onto great things, with a large number of our alumni pursuing further musical and compositional education and creative careers.

We know that whilst exploring and developing their creative skills, a week at SaM Summer School also helps to build young people's confidence and essential life skills for the future - alongside many new and life-long friends.

We are very excited to be preparing to celebrate our 10th birthday in 2018, with a host of special activities and events.

But our key aim is that we want to support more young people than ever before, no matter what background they are from, and to challenge perceptions, and enable more young people to have this unique experience - for the next 10 years!!!
