Matthew Kaner has been selected to take part in Embedded: BBC Radio 3’s Composer in 3!

He will work closely with Radio 3’s programme makers in composing pieces which introduce the station’s audience to a diverse range of new music, becoming an integral part of the station's 70th anniversary celebrations of the Third Programme in September 2016.

BBC Radio 3’s Embedded: Composer in 3 is the biggest commission for a young composer that BBC Radio 3 has ever made. Matthew Kaner will work day-to-day with the station for 70 days from 29th September. He will establish his voice with Radio 3’s listeners with a diverse portfolio of short pieces, among them a premiere every Monday morning for Radio 3’s Breakfast programme (6.30-9am). He will also create other short works for a whole range of Radio 3 programmes and talk about the process of composing classical music today, encouraging audiences to discuss and engage with contemporary music.

Matthew Kaner said:

"I can't quite believe that the BBC and Sound and Music have selected me for this incredible and ground-breaking opportunity. I am absolutely thrilled, and really look forward to working with the wonderful Radio 3 team on several new projects for broadcast across its network."

Hannah Bujic, Creative Project Leader at Sound and Music said:

"I’m thrilled that Matthew has been selected as the Embedded: Radio 3’s Composer in 3. I’m looking forward to hearing his music reach the ears of the station’s listeners, in what will hopefully be a journey of discovery for everyone involved. It’s an intense project and Matthew is brimming with ideas for making new music a central part of Radio 3’s schedule over the 70 days.”

Alan Davey, Controller of BBC Radio 3, said:

“BBC Radio 3’s job is to connect our millions of listeners with remarkable music and culture - this was the ambition for the original Third programme.  Therefore  it is fitting that we are commissioning new works and championing new talent for our 70th anniversary. Putting contemporary classical music across the heart of the schedule and unpacking it for audiences is something I am passionate about. With these commissions I feel we’re once again showing our pioneering spirit as a cultural patron, commissioning fresh works by some of the talented composers today.”

In brief...

What drew you to applying for this Embedded residency with BBC Radio 3?

"The residency looked like a really unique opportunity and caught my attention as soon as it was announced. I'm an avid listener of BBC Radio and believe that it's incredibly powerful medium for promoting and raising awareness and understanding of new music on a national level. To have an active influence on how Radio 3 presents contemporary music, and develop my profile as an artist through such a high-profile platform just seemed too good to miss."

What are you most excited about in the run up to working with the radio station?

"There are so many exciting projects that this residency will enable me to realise, I'm almost overwhelmed to be honest! Working with the BBC's numerous wonderful ensembles and orchestras throughout the process will be amazing, and I'm particularly looking forward to writing for all sorts of different forces for my weekly 3-minute piece for the breakfast show."

What is your favourite programme on BBC radio 3?

"I can't quite decide which I like the most; it's a close-run contest between Hear and Now and Late Junction!"
