Congratulations Donghoon Shin!

Donghoon Shin has been selected as the next Apprentice Composer-in-Residence with Birmingham Comtemporary Music Group as part of Sound and Music's Embedded scheme.

He will be be immersed in the group’s activities from September 2017 to summer/autumn 2018, observing and participating in all aspects and developing an insight into a broad range of the ensemble's work.

The residency will include writing a new work for the ensemble to premiere in 2018 as well as a shorter piece for young performers as part of their Learning and Participation programme. He will get to know the ensemble and all the group's activities through visits, shadowing of composers, observing rehearsals and performances,  as well as attending workshops and receiving bespoke coaching and mentoring.

Donghoon Shin, Composer-in-Residence said:

"I am thrilled to be the Apprentice Composer-in-Residence of the Birmingham Contemporary Music Group through the Embedded scheme of Sound and Music.  I look forward to enhancing my musical language and voice through working with the fantastic musicians of the BCMG."

Stephan Meier, Artistic Director of Birmingham Contemporary Music Group, said:

“In appointing Donghoon Shin we are pleased to be continuing a fruitful collaboration with Sound and Music.  The joy of this scheme is to be able to work intensively with a composer over a prolonged period of time and to watch as their understanding of the ensemble, and the music that they write, develops. Donghoon is an extraordinary composer who’s keen to develop his practice. As a Korean who has been taught on different continents, he looks for ways to explore and incorporate different traditions in his music. BCMG is very glad to offer him a new opportunity to do just that and we are looking forward to his stay with us, his input, and to exchanging ideas during our 30th anniversary 2017-18 season.”

Previous versions of the scheme, which has been running since 2012, have paired the group with composers Patrick Brennan, Seán Clancy, Joanna Lee, Shiori Usui and Arne Gieshoff.
