We are pleased to announce the following composers have been selected to work with Resonance FM and Apartment House:
Vitalija Glovackyte with Apartment House
Vitalija Glovackyte is a Lithuanian composer, curator and performer based in Manchester. Constantly searching for new sounds and mediums, her music is characterised by the juxtaposition of low-fi analogue electronics with acoustic instruments, and the use of multimedia. Current projects include a set of pieces for bass guitar and low-fi devices, and a 40' work for ensemble, dancer, live electronics and visuals.
Vitalija is currently completing her Bmus degree at the Royal Northern College of Music, studying with Larry Goves. She has worked with groups such as Manchester Camerata, Distractfold Ensemble in venues such as Bridgewater Hall, Peckham Multi-storey (LCMF 2013). Recently she was accepted on the LSO Panufnik Scheme, as well as an Embedded Residency with Apartment House. Separate from composing Vitalija is the co-founder of ACM ensemble, a new music group based in Manchester.
Jobina Tinnemans with Apartment House
I often include nonmusicians to be part of my ensemble, who by their activity create a rhythm or sound secondary to their action for its particular timing. MATA festival New York commissioned me to write a composition for their 2013 edition. For this work I approached the majestic coastal soundscape of my Pembrokeshire adopted home as an instrument. ‘Killing Time’, for piano, cello, clarinet, guzheng and 5 knitting performers on prepared knitting needles who reproduced organic timing on stage, premiered in Brooklyn, last April. ‘Shakespeare and Hedgeshear’ (2007), which was composed specifically for its performance space – a disused gasometer in Germany – has parts for two table tennis teams and three performers pruning hedges. Next performance is in Wroclaw at the 'ISCM World Music Days 2014'.
Daniel Wilson with Resonance 104.4fm
Daniel Wilson is a composer, sound designer, researcher and instrument builder. Wilson was 2007 winner of the Arts Foundation Award for electro-acoustic composition. Elsewhere, he records as Meadow House, the name under which his debut album was released, showcasing his self-built instruments. He is also a founding member of the electroacoustic improv group Oscillatorial Binnage. He was been featured in The Wire, in Unknown Public, in Prof. Nic Collins’ book Handmade Electronic Music, and has written for Leonardo Music Journal, Fortean Times and Polluto among others.
13 January 2014 - Applications now open
For our Spring 2014 Embedded residencies, we are delighted to announce two opportunities: a new partnership with Resonance 104.4FM and another residency opportunity with Apartment House.
Resonance104.4FM is a ground-breaking radio station dedicated to the arts. It broadcasts 24/7, in over 20 languages, over its local London frequency and worldwide via live streaming.
We’re offering the opportunity for one composer to immerse themselves in the environment of the station for nine months, creating new work that connects with its diverse audience. The brief is open: if you are interested in engaging with the station’s activity, broadcasters and artists then this opportunity is for you. Resonance is particularly keen to encourage proposals that innovatively explore the medium of radio, beyond the scope of traditional broadcasting, and which connect with the station’s ethos of experimentation.
Apartment House is an ensemble of flexible instrumentation, allowing for a vast range of performance possibilities, created by the cellist Anton Lukoszevieze in 1995. Under his Direction it has become a venerable exponent of avant-garde and experimental music from around the World.
We're offering a development opportunity for one composer to spend c18 months in residence with Apartment House. The successful applicant will have the opportunity to gain experience in both creating and presenting new work in collaboration with the ensemble. The residency provides support and space to develop creative ideas and compositional practice.
