Call for Heart and Soul, BCMG & British Library Sound Archive are now closed

We'll be announcing the selected for all three calls in the autumn.

Embedded is a Sound and Music composer and creative-artist development programme. Funded by The Esmée Fairbairn Foundation, Embedded places a selection of composers from a range of disciplines into extended relationships with leading national arts organisations. Embedded is a bespoke programme, providing practical hands-on experience and a range of significant creative opportunities. So far over forty artists have benefited from Embedded, and there is overwhelming evidence that it can be a transformational experience in terms of talent development, artistic ambition, professional experience and growing networks.

Embedded is a bespoke programme, providing practical hands-on experience and a range of significant creative opportunities. So far over thirty composers have benefited from Embedded, and there is overwhelming evidence that it can be a transformational experience in terms of talent development, artistic ambition, professional experience and growing networks. For our Autumn Embedded residencies, we are delighted to announce partnerships with Heart n Soul and National Sound Archive at the British Library.

Heart n SoulHeart n Soul Logo
This residency provides an opportunity for a composer to connect with award-winning creative arts company Heart n Soul, whose work is about art, taking part, training and sharing, for up to 18 months.

This is a rich professional development opportunity for a composer to work across Heart n Soul’s existing programme with other artists and participants, to explore new ideas and create new work in the context of the arts company’s aim of breaking down perceptions of how learning disabled and non-disabled artists can work together.

The composer will have the opportunity to work with their network of artists and participants, and to develop new work and/or strands of work with the organisation. The context and scale of activity is flexible, and this might include engaging with key events and projects, developing training opportunities and building new and innovative projects alongside other Heart n Soul artists.

Two composers will get the chance to work with this brilliant and one-of-a-kind national resource of sounds at the British Library.

Totalling 7 million recordings on a range of formats, The British Library is the repository of the nation’s sound collections. Its holdings trace the history of recording technology, with audio artefacts dating as far back as 1880.

The selected composers will each spend 12 months in residency at the
British Library, immersed in the rich and diverse sound history to inform new creative work.

The successful applicants will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the British Library Sound Archive by learning how to research and utilise the collections, studio facilities and sound recording equipment under the guidance of specialised subject Curators and technical staff.

BCMG LogoBCMG
We’re partnering with the world-leading contemporary ensemble, BCMG (Birmingham Contemporary Music Group) for the fourth time, after successful residencies with composers Seán Clancy, Joanna Lee, Shiori Usui, and Arne Gieshoff from 2012 – 2015.

This residency provides one selected composer with the opportunity to immerse themselves in BCMG’s activities from September 2015 to summer/autumn 2016, observing and participating in all aspects and developing an insight into a broad range of BCMG’s work. Writing for a new work for the ensemble premiere in 2016 as well as a potential short solo piece for a young performer early on in the residency as part of BCMG’s Learning and Participation programme, the residency is truly unique.
