Adopt a Composer 2012

Southwark Youth Orchestra
Date:
Oct 2012 - Oct 2013

Adopt a Composer is run by Making Music in partnership with Sound and Music, in association with BBC Radio 3, and funded by PRS For Music Foundation.

The Adopt a Composer project is a wonderful annual opportunity for an amateur orchestra, choir or band to 'adopt' an up-and-coming composer. The composer works with the performing group over the course of 12 months to produce a new piece of music, culminating in a premiere performance.

The Adopt a Composer scheme pairs an amateur ensemble - ranging from choirs and orchestras to fretted string orchestras and lever harp ensembles - with an emerging composer. Over the year the partners will collaborate to produce a new work especially for the group to premiere. It is a unique opportunity for amateur musicians to work directly with a composer, to be actively involved in the creative process and to discover new music. The composer has a chance to form a close working relationship which is not always possible in professional commissions, responding to a group's personality and interests.

Since it began in 2000, Adopt a Composer has created nearly 70 partnerships and produced hugely diverse works and performances in the process, from choral settings of William Blake poems to a piece of short movements inspired by a box of chocolates. While not all the works receive further airings, many composers have had further performances or commissions as a result of being on the Adopt a Composer scheme and several have been nominated for awards.

The scheme is funded by the PRS for Music Foundation and run by Making Music in partnership with Sound and Music and BBC Radio 3. This year we have some fantastic pairings with a variety of vocal, string and woodwind ensembles, and an exceptionally high percentage of female composers!

The 2012 pairings are:

Bristol Saxophone Ensemble and Sarah Lewis mentored by David Horne

Southwark Youth Orchestra and James Wilson mentored by Colin Riley

Tudor Orchestra and Soosan Lolavar mentored by Fraser Trainer

Ty Cerdd and Amble Skuse mentored by David Horne

Rennaisance Singers and Stephanie Conner mentored by Colin Riley

Music for Everyone and Rebecca Dale mentored by Fraser Trainer

The project costs nothing for the group involved and is funded by the PRS for Music Foundation. It is supported by BBC Radio 3, who records each of the première performances.
