The Smith Quartet is joined by two other student quartets, including Conservatoire Junior Fellows the Boult Quartet, for a performance of Steve Reich’s Triple Quartet. Short works by Andrew Poppy and Joe Cutler complete the programme, alongside the world premiere of a new commission from recent graduate Joshua Penduck, who won the Birmingham Conservatoire Composition Prize in 2009.
This year's Frontiers+ Festival focuses on the music of Louis Andriessen.
At the very forefront of contemporary music for nearly 40 years, Dutch composer Andriessen has created a European brand of minimalism which draws upon influences from minimalism and jazz to Stravinsky and modernism, often delivered with the power of a rock band. Distinguished musicians contributing to Frontiers+Andriessen include the Smith Quartet, Monica Germino, Michaela Riener and resident ensemble Decibel, alongside performances by students and tutors from Birmingham Conservatoire. We are delighted that Louis Andriessen will be in residence, attending performances, working with student performers, giving composition masterclasses and receiving an honorary doctorate from Birmingham City University.
All tickets available on the door: 30 minutes prior to afternoon events and 60 minutes prior to evening events.
The Festival is sponsored by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands, the PRS for Music Foundation, the RVW Trust and the Holst Foundation.
