Portfolio: Kuljit Bhamra
Kuljit Bhamra is one of the most inspiring musicians in the British Asian music scene. Previous Artistic Director of the Society for the Promotion of New Music, he is perhaps best known as one of the pioneers of British Bhangra and for his unique tabla technique. The selected composers will develop their skills in writing for tabla, percussion and harp, using the notation system developed by Kuljit himself, premiering their works in mid 2016.
Porfolio Composers: Sarah Sayeed, Pete Yelding & Laura Reid
Sarah Sayeed is a writer/performer who has grown up on a musical diet of Tagore, Motown and electronica. These influences can be heard across the works she has created over the years.
Laura Reid’s eclectic career has encompassed many styles of music, collaborating with: singer songwriter Kathryn Williams, AV artists the Light Surgeons, The Matinee Orchestra (Arable Records), Thea Gilmore, Maximo Park (Warp Records), Fourhands, and performing on Later with Jools Holland, and Folk Brittania (BBC4).
Since picking up the cello from an early age, Pete Yielding has engaged with a number of musical forms that determine the basis of his philosophies, practices and output. A large part of his childhood and teens was spent on small community camps and festivals, where encounters with musicians from across the world taught him a great deal.
Portfolio is a Sound and Music artist development programme. Aimed at talented composers at an early stage in their career, Sound and Music’s Portfolio scheme provides a key development opportunity for composers to create new work with and for some of the UK’s leading ensembles and presenters of new music. Portfolio enables them to develop their portfolio of work and gain vital artistic and practical insight and experience in working with professional ensembles and presenting organisations, and delivering new work to public audiences.
